The Indianapolis Association of Black Journalists hosted a Final Four mixer that brought together media professionals, creatives and community members for an evening centered on connection, culture and conversation.
Attending on behalf of the IU Exchange, the event offered a meaningful opportunity to engage with professionals across journalism, public relations and digital media in an environment that felt both intentional and welcoming.
About IABJ
The Indianapolis Association of Black Journalists is a local chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists. The organization is dedicated to supporting Black journalists and media professionals through advocacy, professional development and community engagement. Events like this mixer reflect its mission to create spaces where connection and collaboration can thrive.
A Welcoming and Engaged Leadership
One of the standout elements of the evening was the presence and accessibility of IABJ leadership.
From the moment guests arrived, board members were actively engaged in the experience. LaMar Holliday helped welcome attendees and set the tone for the event with a warm, approachable energy. His presence, along with other members, made it easy for guests to feel comfortable navigating the space.
Matthew Fultz, president of IABJ, also took time to connect with attendees, sharing insight on membership and encouraging continued involvement. As a former president of the NABJ chapter at IUPUI, the opportunity to connect with leadership on a professional level made the experience even more meaningful.
Throughout the evening, executive board members remained visible and engaged—checking in with attendees, facilitating introductions and helping foster genuine connections across the room.
A Space Designed for Organic Networking
Held at Kountry Kitchen, the venue provided the perfect backdrop for an evening of fluid, organic networking.
The layout allowed for both group conversations and one-on-one interactions, creating an environment where attendees could move freely and engage at their own pace. Whether reconnecting with former classmates and colleagues or meeting new professionals in the field, the space encouraged authentic conversation without pressure. Music by DJ Mary Jane added to the atmosphere, blending genres in a way that kept the energy consistent while still allowing for meaningful dialogue.
Food, Culture and Community
The event also delivered on experience. Guests enjoyed a menu that reflected comfort and culture, including fried chicken, deviled eggs, shrimp and grits, and soul rolls filled with greens and sweet potatoes. A cash bar, along with lemonade and water, rounded out the offerings. The service and staff at Kountry Kitchen contributed to the overall experience, ensuring the evening flowed seamlessly.
Why It Matters
Beyond networking, the mixer served as a reminder of the importance of creating spaces for Black media professionals to connect, collaborate and grow.
In a time when representation in media continues to evolve, opportunities to engage in conversations around journalism, broadcasting and public relations are critical. Events like this not only strengthen professional networks but also reinforce the value of storytelling within the community.
For Indy Pulse, the evening also provided an opportunity to connect with professionals whose stories deserve to be amplified, further supporting a mission rooted in community-driven storytelling.
Final Thoughts
The IABJ Final Four mixer was more than an event—it was a space where relationships were built, ideas were exchanged and community was strengthened.
With engaged leadership, an intentional atmosphere and a strong sense of purpose, the evening highlighted the impact of organizations like IABJ and the continued need for spaces that support and elevate Black voices in media.
